Discipline by Uniformed Beauty

The majority of sketches I've posted so far on this blog have been done with graphite pencils. I normally will not resolve to the use of and eraser, but occasionally something just doesn't look right to me and  I will resort to using it.

The pen on the other hand does not offer this easy out if things go wrong. This sketch was done entirely using a cheap ballpoint pen. It is a process that can be very liberating once you make the commitment.

Rework of Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein

Bernie Wrightson is a legend among comic illustrators in the Sci-Fi/Horror genre. He was the artist for the comic book series the Swamp Thing, and if anyone every read Heavy Metal magazine or saw the 1980 animated movie by the same name, you may also know that Captain Stern is based on a character created by him. He has collaborated with Steven King on the comic book version of Creepshow, and also has created cover artwork for many of the most popular comic book heroes of the past.

Mr. Wrightson also published a book back in 1983 aptly named Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein. I will be honest and tell you, I never read the book, but it' a good segue to this week's artwork. This particular piece wasn't from the book but of a rendering Wrightson did back in 2006. I wanted to work on my pencil rendering skills, and did not want to waste my time thinking of an original concept, so I found this one on-line and went to work.

Habs Goalie

This pose with the exaggerated head on this sketch was taken from a photo found online of Montreal's goalie Carey Price.
